People read, watch, listen, experience, and learn differently than before. Attention spans are shorter. Pacing in literature, film, and video is faster. The words we use are less formal and often more expressive. Learners are people—they have feelings and fears and face unseen challenges. Teaching and learning include videos, podcasts, and performances instead of chalkboards and rows of desks. So why do we teach the same ways we’ve always taught?

It’s time educators embraced grading formats that reinforced feedback and growth. Revisions, feedback, and improvement are more valuable than “getting the work done.” Let’s evolve feedback and mentorship to match the needs of today’s learners.
